Fun Facts About Herons
Herons are wading birds designed with long legs, long necks, and sharp dagger-like beaks. These graceful birds are found near water all around the world including rivers, lakes, marshes, and coastlines. They have excellent eyesight and can stand very still while waiting for fish, frogs, or other prey to come near.
There are about 65 species of herons including egrets and bitterns. These birds use a special hunting technique where they stand motionless in shallow water and then strike like lightning when they spot food. Herons fly with their necks curved in an S-shape and nest in colonies called rookeries high in trees near water.
