Fun Facts About Loons
Loons are diving birds designed with sleek bodies, webbed feet, and dagger-like beaks. These water birds are found on northern lakes and coastal waters in North America, Europe, and Asia. Loons are famous for their haunting calls that echo across quiet lakes and their distinctive black and white checkered feathers during breeding season.
There are 5 species of loons and they are excellent underwater swimmers. These birds can dive up to 200 feet deep and stay underwater for several minutes while chasing fish. Loons have solid bones instead of hollow ones like most birds, which helps them dive deeper but makes it hard for them to walk on land.
