Fun Facts About Nightjars
Nightjars are nocturnal birds designed with wide mouths, large eyes, and excellent camouflage feathers. These birds are found all around the world in forests, deserts, and grasslands. During the day, nightjars rest on the ground or tree branches where their mottled brown and gray feathers make them look like pieces of bark or dead leaves.
There are about 100 species of nightjars and they are expert insect hunters at night. These birds fly with their mouths wide open to scoop up moths, beetles, and other flying insects. Nightjars make churring or whip-poor-will sounds at night and lay their eggs directly on bare ground without building nests.
