Fun Facts About Shorebirds
Shorebirds are wading birds designed with long legs and specialized beaks for finding food along coastlines. These birds are found on beaches, mudflats, and marshes around the world. Shorebirds include sandpipers, plovers, and oystercatchers, and many have long pointed beaks perfect for probing in sand and mud.
There are over 200 species of shorebirds and many are incredible long-distance fliers. These birds migrate thousands of miles between their breeding and wintering grounds, some flying non-stop for days! Shorebirds eat worms, crabs, clams, and small fish they find by poking their beaks into wet sand and sensing movements with touch.
