Fun Facts About Cnidarians
Cnidarians are simple aquatic animals designed with soft bodies and special stinging cells for catching prey. This group includes jellyfish, sea anemones, corals, and hydras found in oceans and freshwater around the world. Cnidarians have a body plan with a central mouth surrounded by tentacles armed with tiny stinging capsules called nematocysts.
There are over 10,000 species of cnidarians living in water from shallow tide pools to the deep ocean. These animals can exist in two forms: polyps that attach to surfaces like corals, or medusas that float freely like jellyfish. Cnidarians use their stinging tentacles to capture small fish and plankton, and coral species build massive reefs that provide homes for thousands of other ocean creatures.
