Fun Facts About Alligators
Alligators are large reptiles designed with powerful jaws, armored bodies, and muscular tails. These impressive predators live in freshwater swamps, rivers, and lakes in the southeastern United States and China. Alligators have dark, scaly skin and can grow up to 15 feet long with over 75 sharp teeth in their mouths!
There are only 2 species of alligators: the American alligator and the Chinese alligator. These reptiles are excellent swimmers and can hold their breath underwater for over an hour while waiting for prey. Alligators eat fish, turtles, birds, and mammals, and they help keep wetland ecosystems healthy by creating holes that other animals use during dry seasons.
