Fun Facts About Gharials
Gharials are unusual crocodilian reptiles designed with very long, thin snouts filled with sharp teeth. These rare reptiles are found only in rivers of India and Nepal where they are perfectly adapted to catching fish. Male gharials have a bulbous growth on the tip of their snout called a ghara that helps them make buzzing sounds.
There are 2 species of gharials and they are critically endangered with very few left in the wild. These fish-eating specialists have narrow jaws that slice through water quickly to catch slippery prey. Gharials spend most of their time in deep, fast-flowing rivers and only come on land to bask in the sun and lay eggs.
